The Augustine charm is a polished heart on fire, stamped with a piercing arrow. St. Augustine is often shown with a flaming, pierced heart in artwork; the Augustinian order's emblem includes it. The symbolism is clear: Augustine's heart was suddenly set on fire for love of God, and the arrow is the Spirit of God moving him to action. St. Augustine was born in Africa in the 4th century to a pagan father and Christian mother, Monica. Gifted and intelligent, Augustine studied to become a teacher. He energetically pursued his career and worldly pleasures, rejecting his mother’s faith. Monica was deeply pained; she spent most of her life praying for his conversion. Her prayers were answered in an extraordinary way: Augustine not only became Christian, but was chosen to become a bishop. More than that, his profound writings, including Confessions, would become foundational for the Church. St. Augustine was recognized as a Doctor of the Church in 1298.
