Born in 1850 in Italy, Frances Cabrini felt her vocation early in life. Even as a child, she was deeply attracted to religious mission work. Turned away from religious life because she was often sick, Frances instead pursued teaching. It wasn’t long before Frances was put in charge of a nearby orphanage and was finally approved to join an order of nuns. In 1880, Frances was charged with starting a new order: the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Mother Cabrini’s order traveled to the United States, where she worked tirelessly to serve poor immigrant populations, establishing orphanages, schools, and hospitals across the country. Frances Cabrini was canonized in 1946, the first American citizen to become a saint.
