St. Catherine of Alexandria, a 4th century daughter of a nobleman, was known for her beauty and intelligence; by the time she was a teenager, she was capable of debating the best philosophers of the kingdom over the merits of Christianity. Furious that her intelligence was leading so many to convert to Christianity, the Emperor Maxentius ordered her to be imprisoned and, later, to be put to death on a spiked wheel. The wheel shattered miraculously. The emperor then had Catherine beheaded. She is one of the Church’s most beloved early female saints.
