Dominic
Patron of astronomers, Dominican Republic
Feast Day August 8
The Dominic pendant is a round medallion with a hammered design. As light hits the piece, it skates over the rounded and dipped metal, creating a play of shadow and light. We chose a hammered texture as a reference to one of St. Dominic’s famous quotes, a part of which is inscribed on the reverse of the pendant: “A man who governs his passions is master of the world. We must either command them or be enslaved to them. It is better to be a hammer than an anvil.”
Dimensions: 20mm
Materials: 14k yellow gold vermeil
St. Dominic was born in Spain in the 12th century. Focused on the faith from his youth, Dominic was brought up to the priesthood by an uncle who was also a priest. Dominic was reflective and intelligent by nature and cultivated this through the extensive study of theology. After becoming a priest, Dominic was tasked with preaching against the Albigensian heresy (which held all material things to be evil). His group of preachers eventually became the Dominicans, the “Order of Preachers.” Their mission was to integrate the study, prayer, contemplation, and preaching of God. Dominic died in 1221 and was canonized soon after, in 1234.
