The Gianna pendant is rich in symbolism. The quote encircling the piece reads in Italian: “Non si puo amare senza soffrire e soffrire senza amare.” This is an abbreviated version of a favorite quote of St. Gianna: “Love and sacrifice are closely linked, like the sun and the light. We cannot love without suffering and we cannot suffer without love.” A vintage-style sun in the center emphasizes this connection, and the four turquoise enamel circles symbolize Gianna’s four children. The overall style of the piece draws from popular jewelry trends of the 1960s.

Gianna Beretta was born in Milan, Italy on October 4, 1922. Devout and intelligent, Gianna excelled in her studies, while ministering to those in need through Catholic organizations. She pursued higher education and became a doctor, specializing in pediatrics. In 1955, Gianna married her husband Pietro Molla, and within four years they were happy parents to three children. In 1961, Gianna experienced serious complications with her fourth pregnancy. Her doctors recommended a full hysterectomy. Gianna refused, choosing to save her baby’s life. She pursued the medical care she could and gave birth to her fourth baby. Despite doctors’ best efforts, Gianna died a week later, saying “Jesus, I love you.”

St. Gianna was canonized in 1994.
