Possibly her highest title, Mary, Mother of Jesus is called “Immaculata” or “The Immaculate Conception” because she was holy and without sin. The ever-humble virgin is a mystery that believers have contemplated for centuries, and the Church’s understanding of Mary’s unique role and attributes has grown over time. The Church teaches that Mary was conceived without sin; that, in fact, this was necessary for her to be able to fulfill her role as Jesus’ mother.
