Kateri

$185.00

Patron saint of Canada, the environment, people in exile - Feast Day July 14

The Kateri necklace honors a Native American saint whose devotion to Christ is a model for us all. The necklace features an intricately detailed feather, a nod to Kateri’s heritage and the artwork that traditionally depicts her adorned with feathers in her hair and clothing. The feather pendant is set horizontally on a distinctive 15.5 inch chain, making it a perfect base layering piece for everyday wear. The chain is unique, combining classic petite round cables with segments of interlocked dapped elements.

Dimensions: 12mm; 15.5” chain

Materials: 14k gold vermeil (pendant and chain)

Kateri Tekakwitha was born in the 1650s to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother. When she was very young, her family fell ill with smallpox. Both her parents died, but Kateri survived with permanent scars and eye damage. As a teenager, Kateri learned more about Christianity and converted, taking the name Kateri (after St. Catherine of Siena). But life became difficult afterwards- her tribe did not understand her faith and often ridiculed and harassed her. Ultimately, Kateri sought refuge in a Catholic mission, where she became known for her special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and for her sweetness and purity. When Kateri died at 23 from illness, it was reported that the lifelong scars on her face miraculously disappeared.
