St. Monica is best known as the devout mother of St. Augustine of Hippo. Born in 330 in North Africa, Monica was a Christian whose parents married her to a pagan man. Monica was patient, kind, and always praying for her husband and children to become Christians. Her husband converted before his death, and her son Augustine’s conversion story is one of the most famous in Church history. Monica never gave up on Augustine- she followed him across countries, cried anguished tears over him, and prayed for him constantly. His writings speak to her steadfast love and humility. Monica died in 387 after Augustine’s conversion. She became a saint soon after her death.
