Scholastica
Patron saint of nuns, protection against storms and rain - Feast Day February 10
The Scholastica is a classic circular pendant that takes its inspiration from the painting Death of Scholastica (1730) by Jean Restout. Like the painting, the pendant depicts the moment of Scholastica’s death, with her soul flying to Heaven in the form of a dove. The mix of polished and soft matte textures creates a beautiful play of light. The reverse of the pendant contains a poignant line from one of St. Benedict’s prayers- a reminder to pray for the patience to wait for the Lord, and for all our loved ones who go before us.
Dimensions: 22mm
Materials: 14k gold vermeil
Scholastica was born into a wealthy family in 480 in Italy. She was the twin sister of St. Benedict, founder of the Benedictine order, and she also established a religious order of women near her brother’s monastery. Scholastica and Benedict were very close, but because of their strict monastic rules, they only met once a year.
On the day of their last meeting, sensing her death was near, Scholastica asked her brother to stay with her through the night. He refused, because the Benedictine rules did not permit it, but a violent storm suddenly raged, forcing him to stay. Scholastica said simply that because her brother refused her request, she asked God to grant it. A few days later, Benedict saw his sister’s soul as a dove rising to Heaven.
